With a career that has spanned more than 40 years, icon PJ Powers Thandeka has truly made a remarkable and lasting impact on South Africa, Africa and the world. Voted one of the top ten people brands in South Africa in 2011, PJ Powers is living her dreams everyday as a musician, author, writer, story-teller, philanthropist, speaker and creative.
PJ Powers – Thandeka has always had one dream since the age of 5: to be a world-class singer, performer and leader. After PJ entered the public eye in the 80’s as the lead vocalist of “Hotline”, the band became the largest selling band in South Africa at that time.
Since going solo, she has churned hits such as: “Jabulani”, “Made in Africa”, “Shosholoza”, “Bette Davis Eyes”, “Jiva Pantsula”, “We Have no Choice”, and “There an Answer”. She has also shared the stage with the likes of Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading, Jimmy Dludlu, Hugh Masekela, Divine Divas, Lord Richard Attenborough, Richard E. Grant, Sibongile Khumalo, Fela Kuti, Johnny Clegg, the Mahotella Queens and HHP, to name a few.
Having a universal appeal and authenticity has lent greatly to PJ Powers – Thandeka’s continued success in this ever-changing industry. Her courageous stance against the apartheid Government led to her being banned in the late 80’s, entrenching her status even more throughout Africa. In the newly free and democratic South Africa, it was the late, great, Nelson Mandela himself who asked PJ to perform at the historically important event of the 1995 Rugby World Cup where she sang the “World in Union” with multiple Grammy award winning traditional folk group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. In 2009, PJ’s rendition of this song was featured in the Academy Award nominated film, “Invictus”.
In the last 3 years, PJ Powers – Thandeka has released yet another chart-topping album, Destiny, as well as a best-selling biography, Here I Am and been acclaimed as one of Africa’s biggest artists in MTN’s CallerTunez sales including sales from her latest single, “There is an Answer” featuring acclaimed Gospel sensation, Sfiso Ncwane. This, however, is not the end. She is set to release her highly anticipated new single ‘Stay’ on 13 June 2016, which critics are predicting will be a classic hit.
PJ Powers – Thandeka is a force to be reckoned with and Africa’s treasure.
